Hungary

August2009, Sighishoara, Romania: The second Work &Witness team to be sent from the Hungarian District left for Sighisoara on the fifth of August with nine Hungarians and four Americans, led by Peter Tulipan, who had participated in the very first Hungarian W&W team to Poland in 2006. Coordination was also provided by District NMI President Gyula Fiak who worked closely together with Peter and Rev. Roberta Bustin, pastor of our Nazarene church in Sighisoara. The American participants included Dr. John Moore (Hungary District Superintendent) and Dave Freeman (Work and Witness Coordinator for Hungary), along with pastor and wife, John and Terry Watkin from California.

It was a joy to see how God used the international church family to accomplish something great for His glory, for the growth of the Church, and for our own spiritual lives.

Hungary W&W Team

The idea of sending a Hungarian team to Sighisoara emerged at an international pastors meeting held in Razgrad, Bulgaria in 2008, where pastors from Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary gathered for encouragement and to envision the future. It was noted by several participants that a rather large Hungarian-speaking population lives in and around Sighisoara. A suggestion was made right away that it would be a good idea to send a group of people from Hungary for ministry and outreach.

With this W&W project we wanted to reach the following goals:
• To provide volunteers from Hungary the experience of international mission, igniting their passion for Mission at large.
• To encourage and help our brothers and sisters serving in Sighisoara.
• To continue the process that started in Razgrad, working together internationally, even across districts and fields as partners in the Great Commission.

We are happy to report the following accomplishments of the Hungarian W&W Team:

1. Our ministry in Romania included sharing the Gospel with Hungarian speaking families, especially with their children. Those families live in very poor sorroundings. The team provided a mini-VBS for children and during that time adults of our group shared conversations with the parents of those children. We left Hungarian Bibles, Christian literature and food as well.

2. We visited two centers for elderly people in Sighisoara because we learned there were Hungarian speaking people among them. We were so glad to share and exchange testimonies with those nice people.

3. In Tigmandru the local kindergarten was waiting to be painted—a small room and a long hallway. The ladies of our group took good care of flowers there. This was completed by our team which also covered all the expenses.

4. On Sunday pastors from the team preached in Sighisoara and Tigmandu.

5. It was the goal of our team to leave as large a financial gift with the Romanian churches as possible. To accomplish this, the team economized on expenses as much as possible. Each group member provided approximately USD 70 and our District NMI Council contributed USD 200. We also requested USD 700 from our district superintendent to cover any further expenses connected with the trip. As a result of carefully saving money we were able to cover every expense without touching the amount we received from our superintendent. This way, after consulting with local leadership, the Hungarian District donated USD 700 to help with transportation and support for the pastor of Tigmandru church as she works to plant new churches.

Even though we spent only a couple of days in Sighisoara we were deeply impacted by the love of Roberta Bustin. She gave up her comfortable, quiet life in big house where she lives and let the Hungarian army stay there for a week. Roberta was to us like a mother to her children. We are very grateful for her hospitality!

Finally, we want to thank to Jay Sunberg, District Superintendent of Romania and Field Strategy Coordinator of SEE, for giving our team a chance to practice ministry in the territory of his jurisdiction.

Respectfully submitted,
Gyula Fiak
Hungary District NMI-coordinator
